Anne's Experience

Antonio Bonanno and Gabi Tolkowsky

I successfully completed a series of courses offered by the Gemological Institute of American receiving my Graduate Gemologist diploma in 1986. GIA produces diamond certificates and is best known for offering bench jewelers and jewelry store owner’s an education in basic gemology.

My fascination with gemology however has always been much greater than the fundamentals; I am truly blessed to have spent several years studying under Accredited Gemologists Association's (AGA) founding father Antonio C. Bonanno.

Mr Bonnano was a scientist who operated an advanced gemological school in Silver Springs, Maryland. I spent nearly two years working in his lab, if there is one person I can attribute my knowledge of diamonds and gemstones to it would be my mentor and good friend Antonio Bonnano.

Returning to New Orleans in the late 1980’s my head was full of all the fascinating characteristics of gemstones, the science to categorize, evaluate and ultimately value them.
I soon became the "jeweler’s gemologist" in Louisiana… the person that jewelry stores would call upon when they needed expertise in gemology.

A few years later while speaking at a national jewelry conference on diamonds I was introduced to and subsequently became friends with Gabi Tolkowsky widely regarded as the worlds most famous and renowned diamond cutter.

Gabi reminded me that some things can not be defined nor categorized by science
and that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

Today’s popular diamond certificates for example can scientifically categorize a diamond, evaluate how rare a diamond may be - yes rarity  is often a function of value – the diamond certificate however does not define the diamonds beauty.

The interaction between the light displayed from a single diamond and the human eye is beyond words, categories and spreadsheets.

This beauty that is experienced is as unique as the human soul that observes the scintillation coming from the diamond and the environment from which it is viewed.

Gabi knows the diamond industry inside out and has cut some of the world's most valuable diamonds, including The Centenary Diamond, made to honor De Beers' centenary celebrations in 1988.The Centenary Diamond

At almost 274 carats, it is the largest flawless 'D', which is the highest color grade diamond in the world. It sold in 1989 for $100 million US dollars.

Anne's Philosophy
Anyone considering a significant diamond purchase should be advised not to rely solely on a piece of paper (diamond cert), signed by a faceless expert, and based on some sterile criteria but to evaluate the diamond's beauty like the experts Gabi Tolkowsky and Anne Dale do... using their own human eyes and hearts.
