How To Know What You Have

Before you bring your jewelry in it helps to have some idea of what you might have. Here are the same basic tests we use — simple enough to try at home, but we are always happy to do them for you at no charge in our store.

The Magnet Test
Gold, silver and platinum are never magnetic. If a strong magnet attracts your jewelry it does not contain much precious metal. Note that some gold chains have magnetic clasps — that does not mean the chain itself is not gold. When in doubt bring it in.

Hallmarks
Hallmarks are stamped characters that identify a piece’s metal content and purity. Look on the inside of rings or near the clasp of a necklace. You may need a magnifying glass or jeweler’s loupe to read them clearly.

Purity Marks
The most important hallmark tells you the metal content. Different countries use different standards so markings vary. We test everything ourselves to be certain — no guesswork, no assumptions.
