The standard practice at chain stores and many independent jewelers is to collect your piece, fill out a ticket, and send it to a repair facility — often out of state — where it joins a queue of other people’s jewelry handled by technicians you will never meet. Your ring travels in an envelope. It comes back when it comes back. If something goes wrong in transit or during the repair, the conversation about accountability gets complicated quickly.

Any piece worn daily — an engagement ring, a wedding band, a chain — should be inspected once or twice a year.

Prongs wear. Clasps loosen. Stones work themselves free gradually before they disappear suddenly. A quick inspection catches small problems before they become expensive ones — or irreplaceable losses.
